Using a tape measure, measure the width of the machine along the bottom (mine is 21").

This will determine the width of the outer shell of your machine cover.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.

Next, measure the machine from the bottom of the back up and around to the bottom of the front. Be sure to measure at the thickest part of the machine (mine is 32").

This will determine the height of the outer shell of your machine cover.

Cut a piece of solid-colored quilted cotton fabric using the measurements you just took. The first measurement is the width and the second measurement is the height (mine is 21" x 32").

Drape the fabric over the machine.

Print templates of your designs from embroidery software.

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool for planning where to stitch.

If you do not have embroidery software to print templates, try  Wilcom's TrueSizer, a free program.

Position the templates on the fabric and tape in place. Leave a 12" x 9" area open in the lower right corner to add a pocket.

Using an air-erase pen, mark the center point and horizontal and vertical axis points of the designs.

Remove the templates and draw line connecting the marks.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines for the first design on the fabric.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is directly aligned with the center point on the fabric.

Embroider the design.

When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer from the backside of the embroidery.

Embroider the remaining design.

Cut a piece of print cotton fabric to 11" x 7 1/2" for the pocket.

Cut a piece of quilter's cotton to 11" x 1 1/4" for the top pocket border.

Align the border fabric along the top edge of the print fabric, right sides together.

Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the top edge only. Press the seam with an iron.

Lay the assembled front pocket piece on top of the print quilted cotton. Pin in place and cut around the outer edge of the front piece shape.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the side and top edges only -- leave the bottom open for turning.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams.

Turn the fabric of the bottom opening in 1/4" and press.

Position the pocket in the lower right of the outer shell. Leave at least 1" between the outer edges of the pocket and the outer edges of the fabric.

Pin in place and sew a 1/8" seam along the side and bottom edges.

Cut two pieces of cotton fabric using your width measurement (mine is 21") by 1 1/4" high. This is for the top and bottom borders of the outer shell.

Align the fabric pieces with the top and bottom edges of the outer shell fabric, right sides together.

Pin in place, and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edges only. Press the seams.

To add the side borders, re-measure the height of the outer shell including the top and bottom borders. Cut two pieces of fabric to 1 1/4" wide by the measurement you just took (mine was 32" before adding the borders and is now 33 1/2").

Align these border pieces with the side edges of the outer shell, right sides together. Pin in place, and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edges only. Press the seams.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.

To prepare the straps, first measure the machine's depth at the widest side at the center (mine is 8").

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.
Take that measurement and subtract 2". Cut two strips of 1" wide knit elastic to this new measurement (mine is 8", so I'll cut the elastic to 6").

To cut the fabric for your straps, multiply your elastic measurement by two (mine is 6", so my new measurement is 12"). Cut four pieces of 2 1/2" wide fabric to the length of this new measurement.

Pair up the fabric pieces, right sides together, and pin in place.

Sew 1/2" seams along each long side edge; leave the short ends open for turning.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.
Turn the fabric right side out and insert the elastic inside.

Turn one end of the fabric in 1/2" and press. Pin elastic at the folded end.

Allow about 1" of the opposite end of the elastic to extend out past the open end of the fabric; pin in place.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.
To create the loop closure, cut a 5" length of 1/8" wide ribbon.

Form the ribbon into a loop and insert it in between the fabric layers at the folded end. Allow about 1/2" of the loop to extend into the fabric.

Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the folded end of the strap. Sew a seam along the opposite open end of the strap.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.
Align the assembled outer shell onto the print quilted cotton.

Pin in place, and cut around the shape of the outer shell.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.
Fold the cover in half lengthwise, making sure the short ends are aligned and wrong sides are together.

Insert the straps between the outer shell and inner lining layers. They should be positioned in the center of each side of the front of the outer shell with the raw ends extending out 1 1/4" from the edges of the fabric.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the outer edges of the fabric leaving about 5" open along the bottom edge.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.
Turn the cover right side out and press the seams. Turn the fabric of the opening in 1/4" and press. Hand sew the opening closed.

Fold the cover together lengthwise, inner lining sides together.  Add a button along the side edges of the back of the cover, about 1 1/2" in from the edge. Be sure that it is aligned with the strap.

Free project instructions for creating a sewing machine cover.
Add the cover to the machine and secure the straps in place by inserting the buttons through the loops.
