Lay the apron flat and position the design.

A template, or printout of a design, is an excellent tool to help with placement.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software.

If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use.

Center the template within the shape, about 4" down from the top of the apron. Mark the center point and the horizontal and vertical axis lines.

Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive.

Even with a sturdy fabric, using temporary adhesive with the cutaway stabilizer is best to help give the fabric support during stitching. And, it also helps the design to wear longer, too.

Lay the apron on top of the stabilizer and hoop both layers together, aligning the marks on the hoop with the marks on the apron.

Then, tighten the hand screw.

Hooping both layers together keeps the fabric flat during sewing which prevents puckering and helps keep the stitches aligned.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point.

Move the edges of the apron and the straps away from the hoop so they will not be sewn over.

Embroider the design.

After the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery.

Leave about 1/2" remaining around the design.

This apron has a pocket -- you can add a design to it as well. Use a seam ripper to open the seams.

Open the seams enough to allow the pocket fabric to be hooped comfortably, but do not remove the pocket completely.

Free project instructions: Embroidering on Aprons

Center the design within the pocket shape and mark the fabric.

Hoop it with one piece of cutaway stabilizer, and embroider the design.

After trimming away the stabilizer from the back of the embroidery, pin the pocket in place and sew a seam following the original seams.
