Multiple Piece Applique
Personalize your embroidery with
favorite fabrics, prints, and
patterns! Applique embroidery is an
excellent opportunity to add your
favorite color, texture, and style
to your projects.
Some applique designs call for just
one piece of fabric, but others use
several different fabric shapes in
one design. These project
instructions show you how to work
with designs known as "multi-piece"
applique. |
The first step is to precut the
fabric pieces for the design.
We're using felt for this
project, but any fabric can be
used. Quilter's cotton is a
favorite because of the wide
variety of colors, prints, and
patterns.
When you download an applique
design you will find two files.
One will start with a "Y"
followed by 4 numbers, and
that's the embroidery file. The
other file ends with
"_DL" which stands for "dieline."
Print a copy of the dieline file
at full size with your
embroidery software.
If you do not have embroidery
software or you are unable to
print from it, you can embroider the dieline file onto a sheet of
paper.
To do this, hoop a piece
of paper. |

Load the dieline file (the file
that ends with "_DL") and attach
the hoop to the machine.
Embroider the dielines onto the
paper.
After the dielines are printed
or stitched, it's time to use
those as "templates" to cut the
fabric.
Begin by making a "sandwich" of
stabilizer, applique fabric, and
the paper template.
Spray a piece of
cutaway stabilizer with a little
temporary adhesive (we use
KK100). |

Smooth the applique fabric on
top of the stabilizer. |
Lay the paper template on top of
the fabric and cut out the
shape.
You may spray the back
of the paper template with a bit
of adhesive to keep it in place
while you cut.
Repeat this process for each
applique shape. |
Hoop the fabric or garment to be
embroidered.
For our project, we are
embroidering on brushed twill
fabric for a pillow
(Click here to see the Turkish
Corner Pillow project).
Attach the hoop to the machine
and load the embroidery design
(that's the file that starts
with "Y" followed by 4 numbers).
Embroider the design.
The first thing that sews is
another dieline.
After the dieline has sewn, stop
the machine. |
Spray the back side of the
coordinating applique fabric shape with
a bit of adhesive and... |

...lay
the fabric right inside of the
dieline shape. |
Continue
embroidering
the design.
The next thing that
will sew is a zig-zag tack down.
This will
bind
the applique fabric to the
garment. |

Continue with the next design.
Watch for a note on the color
change sheet that says "dieline." After each dieline
sews, stop the machine. |
Spray the backside of the next
applique fabric piece with adhesive and
place it inside the dieline shape. |

Continue embroidering the zig-zag
stitch. |
Continue
embroidering each element of the design, adding
applique pieces after each
dieline sews.
Throughout the
design, satin stitch borders
will also sew around each
shape. This
gives the applique fabric a
nice, smooth seal. |

The
applique design might have other
elements that embroider, too.
This design has a tree and
leaves.
You'll find the color change
sheet is helpful when
embroidering, as the fields are
labeled with convenient
descriptions. |
After the design has sewn,
carefully trim away the excess
stabilizer on the back of the
embroidered design.
You have now completed the
project! Colorful and
creative, applique embroidery is a fun
way to use your fabric remnants
to create a fantastic and
personalized design! |
