Cut the fabric for the outer shell of the fabric to 35 x 21 inches.
Measure and mark 10 inches in from the bottom on the right side. Draw
a line connecting the marks. This line is the outer edge of the
embroidered area of the outer shell. |
With your embroidery software, create
paper templates of the designs by printing them at full-size. Cut
around the designs to make them manageable.
Place the border designs 3 inches from the top center and 3 inches
from the bottom center. Measure equal distances in from the sides of
the embroidered area to the center of the designs. |
Place the other designs 1 x 1
1/4 inches from the edge of the designs to the edge of the
border designs. Using an air-erase pen, poke a hole in the
center of the templates and mark the fabric. Mark the horizontal
and vertical axis points, as well. |
Remove the templates and draw lines connecting the horizontal and vertical axis
marks. These lines will be used for hooping. |
Lightly spray the stabilizer with temporary adhesive. Hoop the fabric
and stabilizer together for the first design, aligning the lines
on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Align the needle
directly over the center point on the fabric, and embroider the
first design.
Repeat hooping and embroidering the other designs for all the
designs on the
outer shell. |
Once the designs are
embroidered, carefully cut away the excess stabilizer. |
For the outer shell ties, cut a length of the light-colored bias tape to 38 inches Fold in one end, sew the end closed, and then sew a seam
along the entire open edge, stopping about 6 inches from the
other end. Fold the other end in and sew it closed. |
Lay the outer shell right side up. Measure and mark the outer
shell by measuring the width and dividing by two. Align the tie
on the center mark with 4 inches of the tie extending out past
the right edge of the outer edge. Pin the tie in place 15 inches
from the right edge. |
Sew the tie in
place by sewing a 1 inch rectangle with an "x" in the center. |
Use the belting to
create the shoulder strap. Fold the ends of the belting in about 1/4
inch and then another inch on both ends. Sew the folded ends before
attaching. Pin the ends of the strap to the outer shell 5 1/2 inches
from the top and bottom edges, about 18 inches from the right side. |
Sew the ends of the
strap to the outer shell by sewing a square with an "x". |
Lay the print canvas fabric right side up. Measure and mark the
following pocket sizes:
** 11 x 11 inches
** 8 1/2 x 8 inches
** 6 x 6 1/2 inches
** 5 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches
Make sure to leave enough fabric around the shapes for hooping.
Measure and mark the center of each of the shapes by measuring the
width and dividing by two, and measuring the height and dividing by two. |
Print out the
designs for the inside pockets at full size. Poke a hole in the
center of the designs and place them in the center of the
appropriate pocket. Mark the horizontal and vertical axis points
onto the fabric. |
Remove the templates
and draw lines connecting the horizontal and vertical axis points.
Embroider the designs as you did before. When the designs have
finished embroidering, carefully trim away the excess stabilizer. |
Cut out the pocket
shapes. |
From the solid
canvas, measure and cut the
inner lining of the pockets by using the
same measurements you used for the pockets. Place the inner lining on
the back of the embroidered fabric.
Add the dark-colored bias tape
along the top edges of each pocket, leaving about 1/4 inch
excess tape extending past the edges. Pin in place. |
Sew a seam along the bottom edge of the bias tape and around the
outer edge of the pockets, tacking the layers together.
Set these aside. |
Cut the plaid fabric
for the inner
shell to 35 x 21 1/2 inches.
To create a pocket for the forks, cut two pieces of the print canvas to 4 x 5 1/2 inches. Lay
the pocket pieces right sides together, pin in place, and sew a 1/4
inch seam around the long sides and one end only. Leave one end open
for turning.
Turn the pocket right side out, press the seams, turn
the open end in 1/4 inch and press in place. Place the pocket about
1 inch from the top of the inner lining fabric, and pin in place. |
Sew a 1/4 inch seam around the sides and top of the pocket,
leaving the bottom end open as an opening for the roasting fork
tines. |
Cut two 20-inch lengths of the dark-colored bias tape for the fork
ties. Sew the open
edge and ends as you did with the other bias tape.
Pin one tie just
under the fork
pocket and the other 1 1/2 inches
from the bottom edge of the inner shell fabric. Sew the ties in
place. |
In each of the two large embroidered pockets, create a pleat by
folding the fabric in 1/2 inch at about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom edges. Pin in place,
and then tack in place with a few stitches. |
Place the pockets on top of the lining fabric
--
chocolate bars and wipes on the left -- marshmallows and graham
cracker pockets on the right.
Leave the center open for the
forks.
The bottom of the pockets should be about 3
inches from the bottom of the inner shell fabric. Fit the pockets
around the items and pin each pocket in place, folding the bottom
and side edges under about 1/2 inch. |
Remove the items,
and sew the pockets in
place by sewing a seam along the outer edges of the pockets. |
Lay the inner shell
right side up and align the outer shell on top with the right side
down. Pin in place
along the top and bottom edge, and along one end. |
Sew a 1/2 inch seam along the pinned edges only, leaving one end open
for turning.
Caution:
Keep the strap and ties away from the edges so they do
not get sewn over. |
Turn the right right
side out and press the seams. Fold the fabric of the open end in 1/2
inch and press in place. |
Top stitch around the entire outer edge of the kit. This closes the
open end and finishes the edge.
Pop the items back
in the pockets, tie in the forks, and roll up your campfire kit, and
away you go. |
