Made from water repellant nylon and cozy fleece, this blanket fits the bill for many summertime activities.  Spread it out to cushion your tush at a parade, or to watch fireworks in comfort. Grab it for an impromptu picnic in the park.

When your activities are finished, just fold it up and fasten the Velcro flap. The on- the-go blanket hangs from a handy shoulder strap for an easy walk back to the car.

Supplies needed:

• 2 yards of 60" wide polar fleece

• 2 1/8 yards of 60" wide nylon fabric

• 1yard of 1" wide nylon strapping to match

• 15" of sew-in Velcro

Positioning the designs
On the corner of the nylon fabric, sew out the feature design. The embroidery should be oriented so that the top of the design is toward the selvage edge of the fabric.  Position it so that it is 7" from the selvage edge and 8" from the cut end of the fabric.

Prepare the polar fleece by trimming off the selvages.

In each corner, sew out a corner design. The embroidery should be 3" to 4" from each edge of the fabric.

Lay out the polar fleece fabric on top of the nylon fabric.  Match the embroidered corner of the nylon with one corner of the polar fleece. In the photo, the embroidered corner of the nylon is at the bottom left.

Trim off the excess nylon fabric from around the edges of the polar fleece. 

Making the flap
From the excess nylon fabric, cut 2 rectangles that are 17" wide by 4 1/2" tall.

On the right side of one rectangle, stitch the hook side of the Velcro fastener,
1" from one long edge.

Place the rectangles, right sides together, and, using a 1/2" seam allowance, stitch around the 2 short sides and the Velcro side. Clip the corners and turn the flap right side out.

Putting the blanket together
Pin the ends of the strapping on the selvage edge of the nylon at points that are 3" and 15" from the cut edge. Now place the flap piece over the strapping with the Velcro side up. Center the flap over the embroidery. Pin the flap in place, meeting the raw edges of the flap with the selvage edge of the nylon.

Now lay out the nylon with the right side up, and lay the polar fleece over it with the right side down. Pin the edges of the two fabrics together so that the fleece doesn't slip against the nylon. Use a 1/2" seam allowance to stitch around the outer perimeter of the fabrics, but leave a 12" opening on one side for turning.

Clip the corners and turn the blanket right side out. Stitch the opening closed and top-stitch around the entire perimeter of the blanket.

Placing the Velcro
Next, fold the blanket so that you can determine the exact placement of the loop side of the Velcro.

Start with the blanket laying flat, with the polar fleece side up. 

Fold the end opposite the flap and handle to meet the opposite end of the blanket.

Fold in half again in the same direction.

Now fold the long rectangle in half, meeting the ends at the bottom of the flap.

Fold in half again in the same direction.  Pin the loop side of the Velcro 1" from the top of the last folded edge.

Unfold the blanket and stitch the Velcro into place.

Fold the blanket up as before, and fasten the flap with the Velcro. Here is what the back of the blanket looks like when it is folded up.
