Basket Liner |
 |
|
All purring and paws, this
basket is lined with feline personality!
A black cat sitting on a
fence peeks out from the bottom of the basket, and kitty
tracks march around the outer perimeter. With a witch and
kitty faces to make the look complete. When the candy gets low, the little
inside kitty is a beguiling surprise for the eyes!

Instructions:
With a flexible tape measure, measure the
following
dimensions on your basket.
(The measurements for this basket are in parentheses.)
-
Inside circumference (24")
-
Inside height, minus the top rolled edge (4")
-
Outside height, plus the top rolled edge (5")
-
The distance between the handles, around the
outside of the rolled edge (13")
Now use your measurements to create your pieces.
|
 |
|
Use the outside measurements to make
the 2 flap pieces. The width should be your 4th
measurement plus one inch for seam allowances. The
height should be twice the 3rd measurement plus an inch
for seam allowances. I marked a fold line halfway
between the top and bottom lines, to help center my
embroidery.
Embroider
your designs in the top half -- above the fold. |
|
 |
|
With an air erase marking pen, trace
around the outside of the bottom of the basket onto your
fabric. This will become the bottom inside piece. You
shouldn't need to add anything for a seam allowance, because the difference
between the circumference inside and the outside will
provide enough additional fabric for a seam
allowance.
Place your embroidery
in the center of this marking. |
|
 |
|
Using the 1st and 2nd measurements, mark out the inner side piece. Add an inch
to each measurement for seam allowances.
Now cut out
all your pieces along your marked lines. |
|
 |
|
To make the flaps, fold along the
marked fold line, with right sides together, and using a
1/2" seam allowance,
stitch the short sides together. Trim the bulk
from the corners.
Turn the flaps right side out and press them flat. |
|
 |
|
To create the inside
lining, join the short ends of your inner side piece,
with right sides together.
Then, join the bottom edge
of the side piece to the outer edges of the bottom
piece.
The two pieces should
form a bowl shape. |
|
 |
|
Put your lining into the basket, and
mark with pins where the flaps should end, so that they
will go around the handle of the basket.
Now, stitch a line of basting stitches
along the unfinished edge of each flap, and loosely
gather the flap to fit between your pin markings.
With right sides
together, stitch the flap to the inside of the
lining.
Hem the gap between the flaps. |
|
 |
|
Put the liner inside the
basket, and flip the flaps over the sides.
Fill with Halloween
treats, and you're ready for the doorbell to ring! |
