Pillow Shams

Pillow Shams |

Pillow shams
complete a coordinated look by drawing
colors from the bed covers. We made these shams to
coordinate with the log cabin blocks on the
bed's quilt, and boy, do they make the
bedroom shine! |
Supplies needed for two
standard shams (24" by 18"):
-
1 yard of a solid
decorator fabric - 54" to 60" wide
-
1 yard of
coordinating striped decorator fabric - 54" to 60"
wide
-
2 3/4
yards of flat trim
-
4 3/4
yards of welting or piping trim.

Instructions:
Mark a long line at least 6"
from the edge of the solid fabric. The line should
be as long as the width of the pillow sham.
Make 3 center marks on
the line where you want the embroidery to be sewn. Our marks were 7
1/2" apart so that the designs would
be spaced 1/2" apart when they are sewn out. |
Sew out each design "on
point" and
then cut out a 25" by 10" rectangle with the designs in
the center. |
From the coordinating
striped fabric, cut out 2 rectangles that are 25" by
5 1/2". |
Stitch the striped
rectangles to the embroidered piece as shown, using a
1/2"
seam allowance. |
Stitch the flat trim to the joined sham
front along the seam lines. |
Baste the welting to the outer edges of
the sham front using a zipper foot. Where the
welting meets, bring the ends of the welting into the
seam allowances, while keeping the line of welting as
continuous as possible. |
Cut out 2 rectangles from the striped
fabric that are 15" wide by 18" tall. Hem one 18"
side of each rectangle. |
Place the sham front on your work surface
with the right side up. Place the rectangles over the
front with right sides down, and the hemmed edges to the
center of the sham. The hemmed edges should
overlap several inches. |
Keeping the rectangles in
place, use a zipper foot to stitch the rectangles to the
front of the sham. Keep the stitching as close as you can to the
welting. Stitch all the way around the outer
perimeter of the sham. Finish the seam allowances.
Turn the sham right side out through the
back slit that is formed by the overlapping rectangles. Now
you are ready to insert a standard sized bed pillow into the sham.
It will be beautiful on your bed. |
