Embroider mask design. You can embroider on any fabric that you wish. Denim is durable and washes easily; felt is comfortable, and leatherette has a shiny finish, so choose whatever you'd like. Stabilize the fabric accordingly.

To make precision cutting easier, cut away most of the excess fabric from around the design.

Cut out the mask design very close to the stitching, being very careful not to cut any stitching.  Make sure that you have some time with few distractions, because cutting the mask out is very precise work.  When cutting out the eye holes, fold the fabric over and cut a small slit, then unfold and extend the slit to go across the eye hole.  Then make an "X" with another slit.  grasping the points of the triangles will make precise cutting a little easier.  For the full face mask, make just one cut along the unstitched line of the nose opening (a hobby knife works well for this).  Do not try to cut along both of the stitched edges.

After you have cut out the masks, you are ready to attach a headband.

Grommets will insure that the headband is securely attached. Small grommets or eyelets work well.  In the embroidered hole area cut an "X" with a hobby knife, that is just a little smaller than the shank of the grommet.  Push the grommet through from the front to the back.  The shank of the grommet should fit tightly and the fabric should grip the grommet.  Tighten the grommet with your grommet tool.

Insert elastic for the headband.  You can stitch the ends, or just tie a knot. It's now ready to wear!

But wait!  If you want to embellish your mask, this is the time to do it.

We used pom-poms and chenille stems for our lady bug mask and peacock feathers for our peacock mask.  

To embellish the ladybug, we cut two chenille stems in half and used hot glue to attach a pom-pom to one end of each of the four pieces.  Then we hot glued the other ends to the back of the mask as shown.  Bend the stems as desired for a fun look.

Before permanently affixing the feathers, experiment to determine what you think looks best for the peacock.  Using hot glue again, we first glued down the "eye" feathers and then used the remainder of the eye feather shank behind it to create a fuller look.   We used some individual fine feathers to accent the center of the mask.
