A fun and festive scrappy stocking is the perfect addition to your home this Christmas season! Hang it on your mantel, on the stair banister, or anywhere else it will catch Santa's eye. Choose different designs to match every personality in your family!

Project Needs & Notes

- 1/2 yard print cotton fabric
- 1/2 yard felt
- 1/4 yard solid-colored cotton fabric
- Small pieces of print cotton fabric
- Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer
- Temporary spray adhesive (like Gunold KK100)
-
Air-erase pen for marking
- 10" length of 1/2" wide ribbon (for loop hanger)
-
Scotch tape

For this tutorial, I used the large size of the North Pole Navidad Santa Claus design. A design that is 6" x 7 1/2" or smaller will fit comfortably in the open area. Find even more festive designs in the Christmas category here.

Finished Size:

16" from cuff to heel
13" from heel to toe
7" opening

To get started, print the PDF of the pattern pieces. There are four pattern pieces that will print on four pieces of 8 1/2" x 11" paper.

Cut out the pieces and tape them together. Set the pattern aside for now.

To prepare the fabric for the top and bottom sections of the stocking, cut small pieces of print cotton fabric into uneven strips.

Make sure each strip is 12" x 5" at the wide end and about one inch at the short end.

Angle the cuts slightly along the width of the fabric.

Align two of the pieces, right sides together, along the long side edges.

Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge only.

With an iron, press the seam open at the backside.

Add another piece just as you did for the first two pieces.

Pin in place, sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge, and press.

Repeat this process until you have a completed piece that is about 12" x 10" for the top of the front of the stocking.

Use this same process to create the bottom of the front of the stocking. That piece should measure about 12" x 11".

To create the center of the front of the stocking, use the same process as you did for the top and bottom pieces using the solid-colored cotton fabric. The piece should measure about 12" x 15".

Attach the top piece and the center piece by aligning the center piece, right side facing up, with the bottom edge of the top piece, right side facing up, as shown.

Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge. Press the seam.

Next, position the design on the fabric. To do this, p
rint a template with embroidery software. If you do not have an embroidery software program, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program that can print templates.

Place the template onto the fabric and arrange it where you'd like to stitch it.
Mark the center point and the axis lines.

Add the bottom piece by laying it on top of the middle piece, right sides together. Angle the bottom piece about 45 degrees to make sure the toe of the stocking properly fits the bottom area of the pattern piece. You can angle the fabric with both pieces lying flat first (right sides up) and place the pattern piece on top to ensure that the pattern will cover properly.

Trim the bottom edge of the middle piece and the top edge of the bottom piece at about a 45 degree angle. Align the edges together, pin in place, and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge. Press the seam. Place the pattern piece on top of the fabric, center it over the marks for the design, and trace the shape.

Spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, and align the marks on the hoop with the marks on the fabric.

Note that the design will be embroidered over the seams in the fabric. Because the seams are pressed flat, and cotton fabric is smooth, this will work just fine.

Attach the hoop to the machine. Load the design, and move the hoop so the needle is directly over the center point.

Embroider the design.

When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery.

Cut out the stocking shape.

To prepare the back of the stocking, lay the fabric flat with the right side facing up. Place the pattern piece on top, wrong side up.

Trace the shape and cut it out.

Lay the embroidered front piece flat, right side facing up. Align the back piece on top, right sides together. Pin in place and sew a  1/4" seam along the side and bottom edges only. Leave the top edge open for turning.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seam. The outer shell of the stocking is complete.

To prepare the inner lining of the stocking, cut two pieces of felt using the pattern piece.

Align the two pieces, right sides together, and sew a 1/2" seam along the side and bottom edges only.

Trim the seam allowance leaving 1/8" remaining.

Insert the outer shell inside the inner lining, right sides together. Align the side seams and top edges and pin in place.

To create the ribbon loop hanger, cut a piece of 1/2" wide ribbon to 10" long, form into a loop and sew a few stitches along the raw ends to tack them together. Insert the loop in between the layers of fabric, at the upper corner opposite to the toe, leaving about 1/2" of the raw end of the loop extending out past the edges of the fabric. Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the top edges of the fabric leaving about 3" open along one side.

Turn the fabric right side out and insert the inner lining inside the outer shell. Turn the fabric of the opening in 1/4" and press. Top stitch a 1/8" seam along the entire top edge of the stocking to finish.
