First, embroider the front of the sweatshirt by following the steps detailed in our Embroidering on Sweatshirts tutorial.

Next, it's time to make the collar.

Measure the circumference of the upper edge of the sweatshirt collar (all the way around the collar). Take this measurement and add 1" for seam allowance.

The sweatshirt used in this tutorial is 24" in circumference. Adding 1" gives a total measurement of 25".

This measurement is the width of the collar.

Cut a piece of knit fabric to your width measurement by 18" high.

The fabric in this tutorial was cut to 25" x 18".

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool to plan where to stitch.

Print a template of the design from embroidery software.
If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use.

Position the template with the outer edges of the design about 3 3/4" in from the left edge of the fabric and about 6 3/4" down from the top edge of the fabric. The embroidery will be on the left side of the collar after construction.

Mark the center point and the vertical and horizontal axis lines.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is aligned with the center point on the fabric.

Embroider the design.

After embroidering, trim the excess stabilizer away.

Fold the fabric in half widthwise with the short sides and right sides together.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edge only.

Turn the fabric right side out.

Tuck one open end of the fabric inside the other open end, wrong sides together.

Align the raw ends of the fabric and the seam together while keeping the design upright just above the fold (as shown).

Note:
If you would like a more loose fitting "cowl" neck collar, sew a 1/4" seam along the entire raw edge of the fabric and skip the next four steps.

For a fitted collar, keep the fabric folded together as in the last step. Then, lay the fabric flat with the seamed edge facing to the left and the raw edges facing up.

Measure and mark 2 1/2" out along the bottom folded edge starting at the bottom left corner.

Draw a line from the mark you just made up to the upper left corner. Flip the fabric over to the other side keeping the folded edge at the bottom.

Unfold the fabric and lay it flat with the side seam directly in the center.

D
raw lines from the original marks to the opposite side of the fabric where the seam ends, creating a large diamond shape.

Cut the fabric along the diamond shape 1/2" in from the lines you just drew. Doing this will completely remove the original seam (a new seam will be sewn in the next step).

Fold the fabric together, right sides together, aligning the raw edges.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the "v" shaped edge only.

To attach your cowl neck or fitted collar to the shirt, align the side seam of the collar with the left shoulder seam on the shirt. The outer side of the collar should be aligned with the inside of the existing collar of the shirt.

Extend the raw edges of the collar into the shirt about 1".

Pin in place around the entire existing collar.

Then, sew a seam along the existing collar seam on the outside of the shirt.

Fold the collar down for wearing.
