Cut a tea towel in half. One half is for the front of the placemat, and one half is for the back.

You may mix and match colors of towels.

In this example, half of a yellow tea towel is for one side of the placemat, and half of a teal towel is used for the reverse.

The next step is to plan where to stitch the design. A template,
or a printout of a design,
is an excellent tool to help with placement.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software.

If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use.

Arrange the template on the towel until it's positioned where you want to stitch it.

Mark the center point, as well as the vertical and horizontal axis lines. These marks help when hooping.

Hoop the tea towel with one piece of cutaway stabilizer.

Line up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine, and load the design.

Move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point, and embroider the design.

A size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing or embroidery needle will work well when embroidering on cotton tea towels.
