Bring this Halloween tote on any haunted outing this October 31! One side on the bag shows the dark and dreary side of All Hallow's Eve, while the other displays a light and cheery theme. You can follow this example to have different themes on each side, or have the same theme on both sides.

The crazy quilt technique uses small pieces of fabric stitched together to form an eye-catching and colorful larger piece.

Embroider your choice of designs onto faux suede, twill, denim, or canvas. Faux suede is used in this tutorial.

One piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer is a good choice when stitching on those types of fabrics.

Embroider your chosen designs. Trim the fabric around the edges of the designs leaving a couple of inches of excess.

In this example, the owl fabric piece is 7" x 10", and the spider web border fabric piece is 9 1/2" x 4 1/2".

Cut several pieces of faux suede and quilter's cotton into irregular shapes.

Piece them together randomly. Align the edges together, right sides together. Pin together.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge. Press the back seams open.

Trim the fabric to create straight edges and repeat the process of piecing the fabric until you have an area that is a bit larger than 7 3/4" x 10".

A
lign the patchwork on top of the bottom embroidered piece, right sides together. Pin in place, and sew a 1/4" seam along the left side only. Press the seam.

Create a patchwork piece that is a bit larger than 6 1/2" x 4 1/2".

Align it on top of the top embroidered piece, right sides together.

Pin in place. Sew a 1/4" seam along the right side only. Press the seams.

A
lign the assembled top piece on top of the assembled bottom piece along the top edge, right sides together.

Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge only. Press the seam.

Trim the entire shape to 14"x14".

Next, using heavy-duty thread and a decorative stitch, top-stitch along some of the seams.

The heavy duty thread shows up better than regular all-purpose thread because it is thicker.

Glue decorative trim along some of the seams using fabric glue, too.

To prepare the side and bottom pieces, cut two pieces of fabric (faux suede is used here) to
4" x 14" for the sides.

Cut one piece to 20 1/2" x 4" for the bottom.

A
lign the side pieces on top of the embroidered piece, right sides together, along the side edges of the embroidered piece.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edges only. Press the seams.

A
lign the bottom piece along the bottom edge of the assembled embroidered/side piece, right sides together.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edge; press.

Pin the ends of the ribbon loops at the top edge of the outer shell about 2" in from each top corner.

Stitch back and forth over the ribbon loops to reinforce the seam.

Turn the bag right side out.
