First, embroider the front of the sweatshirt by following the steps detailed in our Embroidering on Sweatshirts tutorial.

Next, it's time to make the collar.

Measure the circumference of the upper edge of the sweatshirt collar (all the way around the collar). Take this measurement and add 1" for seam allowance.

The sweatshirt used in this tutorial is 20" in circumference. Adding 1" gives a total measurement of 21".

This measurement is the length of the collar.

Fold the knit fabric in half lengthwise (long edges aligned) and press the fold with an iron.

Cut a piece of medium-weight fusible stretch interfacing using the original collar length measurement (without the seam allowance) by 1 3/4" high.

It is important to use stretch interfacing so it will stretch with the knit fabric. Insert the interfacing between the layers of knit, aligning the long edge of the interfacing with the fabric fold.

Press in place, following the instructions on the interfacing packaging.

With the folded edge facing you, measure and mark the fabric using your length measurement by 3 1/2" high. The measurement in this example is 21", so we marked the fabric to 21" x 3 1/2".

Leave 1/2" at each short end of the interfacing (this prevents the ends of the collar from getting bulky).

Fold the short ends of the collar together, right sides together.

Pin in place, and sew a 1/2" seam along each short end.

Turn the collar right side out and press the seams.

Y
ou can finish off the bottom edge of the collar by serging along the raw edge. Or, if you do not have a serger, simply zigzag stitch along the raw edge.

Turn the shirt inside out. Measure and mark the center of the front bottom of the existing collar.

S
tarting at the center and working from left to right, place one end of the knit collar about 1/4" to the right of the center.

The bottom (raw) edge of the collar should be aligned with the bottom edge of the existing collar.

Pin in place around the existing collar. Overlap the end of the collar back at the center front (about 1/4" to 1/2"); pin in place.

Turn the shirt right side out again and sew a seam down the center of the existing collar all the way around.

S
ew another seam along the bottom edge of the existing collar, all the way around. Fold the collar down covering the existing collar for wearing.

Add a dressier look to your sweatshirt with a ribbed knit collar. It's easy, and a great way to update your wardrobe.

For another fun sweatshirt conversion, try adding a turtleneck collar instead!
