These instructions show how to make a large size tote bag. Measurements for smaller bags are also included below.

Fold the fabric in half. Keeping the fold at the bottom, cut the fabric to 26 1/2" x 26 1/2".

Some of the excess will be used to make handles later.

(If making a medium size bag, cut the fabric to 20" x 20". If making a small size, cut the fabric to 13 1/2" x 13 1/2".)

In each corner of the folded edge, draw a 6 1/4" x 4 5/8" rectangle.

(If making a medium bag, draw the rectangles to 4 3/4" x 3 1/2". For the small size, draw the rectangles to 3 1/4" x 2 3/8".)

Cut out the rectangles, cutting through both layers of fabric.

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool to plan where to stitch.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software.
If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use.

Arrange the template on the fabric, centering it between the 1" seam allowance at the top, and the top of the cut-out rectangles.

Center it between the marks for the sides.

Mark the center point as well as the horizontal and vertical axis lines. These marks help to hoop the fabric straight.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric.

Embroider the design. A size 11 or 75/11 sharp needle is a nice choice when embroidering on sturdy fabrics.

Zigzag stitch along the raw edges. Or, if you have a serger, then serge along the edges of the seams. That prevents the seams from unraveling.
