The design used in this project is D2303, Call of the Wild.

On the solid-colored fabric, draw a rectangle that is 21" x 9".

Leave a few inches of excess around the shape.

Mark the center of each side, then draw lines connecting the marks. Where the lines intersect should be the center of the rectangle.

Hoop the fabric with a piece of cutaway stabilizer, lining up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the embroidery design. Move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point.

Embroider the design. (Note: when choosing designs for this project, ensure that there's at least 1" of space between the edges of the design and the edges of the rectangle.)

After embroidering, unhoop the fabric and trim the excess stabilizer away from the back.

Cut out the rectangle.

Prepare the fabric for the top front panel.

C
ut a piece of the print fabric
21 1/2" x 10".

Fold one of the short edges over 1/2" to the wrong side of the fabric and press with an iron.

Pin in place.

Sew a 1/4" seam along that side. This seam will become one of the finished ends of the drawstring pocket.

Lay the embroidered middle front panel with the right side facing up.

Align the top front panel on top, right sides together, with the sewn edge on the right.

Pin in place along the top edge.

Sew a 1/2" seam along the top edge.

Lay the panels face down and press the back seam open.

Next, prepare the fabric for the front pocket.

Cut a piece of the print fabric, and a piece of the solid-colored fabric, to 13 1/2" x 9".

Align the fabric pieces together, right sides facing. Pin in place.

Sew a 1/2" seam along both long edges and one short edge.

The remaining short edge should be left open for turning.

Turn the pocket fabric right side out and press the seams.

Also, turn the open edge in 1/2" and press in place.

Pin the open end closed.

Align one of the long edges of the pocket fabric with the bottom edge of the zipper. Pin in place.

Using a zipper foot, sew a seam along the top edge of the fabric.

Mark the center point on the top edge of the zipper (measure and dividing by two).

Lay the assembled top and middle front panels flat with right sides facing up.

Align the center mark of the zipper with the center line on the middle panel.

Flip the pocket up so that the top edge of the zipper is aligned with the bottom edge of the middle panel. The bottom of the pocket should be aligned with the top edge of the middle panel.

Pin in place along the backside of the zipper.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the edge of the zipper.

Cut a piece of print fabric 21" x 15". This is for the bottom front panel.

Align one of the short ends of the fabric with the bottom edge of the middle panel, right sides facing.

The pocket should remain lying flat, right side down, on top of the middle panel.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edge only.

Lay the panels flat, right side down, and press the back seam open.

Top stitch a 1/8" seam along the top edge of the zipper.

Flip the pocket over so that it's lying on top of the bottom panel.

Pin it in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the side and bottom edges only. Do not sew the top edge.

This will attach the pocket to the bottom panel and will also close the remaining openings of the pocket.

Cut another piece of print fabric 21 1/2" x 31 1/2" to make the back panel.

Fold one of the long edges over 1/2" to the wrong side, press, and pin in place.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge only. This seam will become one of the finished ends of the drawstring pocket.

Place the assembled front panels out with the right sides facing up. Align the back panel fabric on top, right sides together, with the seamed edge on the right.

Pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam starting 2 1/2" from the top right corner (the folded seam edge).

Sew along the right edge, the bottom edge and up the left side, stopping at the very top of the top left corner.

Next, square off the two bottom corners of the outer shell.

Leave the outer shell turned wrong side out. On both bottom corners, align the seams together creating a point.

Lay the corner down flat and measure 4" down on each side starting at the point.

Draw a line to connect the marks.

Sew a seam across the line and then trim away the point leaving a 1/2" seam allowance.

To prepare the drawstring pocket, fold the top edge of the outer shell down 1/2" to the wrong side and press.

Fold the top edge down again
1 1/4" and press.

Turn the shell right side out.

Cut two pieces of the solid colored fabric 20 1/2" x 29 1/4" for the inner lining.

Align the pieces together, right sides facing and pin in place.

Sew a 1/2" seam along the sides and bottom edge, but leave the top edge open.

Square off the bottom two corners just as you did with the outer shell.

Fold the top edge of the inner lining 1/2" to the wrong side and press in place.

Place the inner lining inside the outer shell, wrong sides together and side seams aligned.

The 1/2" seam allowance of the inner lining should be aligned with the bottom 1/2" of the fold of the outer shell and pinned in place.

Sew a 1/8" seam along the top edge of the inner lining fold.

This binds the inner lining to the outer shell and completes the drawstring pocket.

To insert the drawstring cord, add a safety pin to one end and insert the pin into one of the openings of the drawstring pocket (on the top right of the bag).

Work the pin through the pocket until you reach the opposite opening.

Thread the ends of the cord through the cord stop. Tie a knot on the ends to prevent them from sliding back through the stop.

Next, add the shoulder strap and loop.

Lay the bag flat with the backside facing up.

Mark the center of the top edge by measuring and dividing by two.

Measure down from the center top edge and make a mark 5 inches down, then 25 inches down. This is where the ends of the shoulder strap will be placed.

Cut a piece of fabric 8" x 4" to create the loop.

Fold the long edges in to meet in the center and press.

Bring the folded long edges in to meet and press.

Sew a 1/8" seam along each long edge.

Fold one end of the strapping in 1/2" and align the folded edge with the top mark (5" down from top of bag).

Bring the ends of the loop together and tuck the ends of the loop under the folded edge of the strap about 1/2".

Pin in place. Be sure to only pin through the back of the bag (one layer of outer shell and one layer of inner lining).

Fold the opposite end of the strap under 1/2". Align the folded edge with the bottom mark (25" from top of bag). Pin in place.

Sew the ends of the strap in place by sewing a box with an "X" through it. The box will be about 2" x 2".
