Trapunto is a centuries-old style where fabric is raised with batting. Bring this technique to your embroidery projects with specially-digitized designs and batting between the fabric and stabilizer.
 


Project Needs & Notes

- Trapunto design
- Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer
- 1/4" to 3/8" thick batting
- Temporary spray adhesive (Gunold KK100)

To demonstrate the technique, a trapunto butterfly design will be embroidered onto a T-shirt.

Mark the area where the design will be stitched by using a template.
A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool for placement.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery soft ware.
If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use.

Position the template on the shirt and mark the center point as well as the vertical and horizontal axis lines.

Turn the shirt inside out.

Spray one side of the batting with a small amount of temporary adhesive.

Smooth that on the back of the area that will be embroidered.

Spray cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive.

Smooth that on top of the batting.

Turn the shirt right side out.

Slide the outer hoop inside the shirt, and press the top hoop in place, lining up the marks on the shirt with the marks on the hoop.

Embroider the trapunto design. The special stitches tamp down some areas of the batting, making other areas stand out beautifully.

After embroidering, turn the shirt inside out.

Trim away the excess batting and stabilizer, leaving about 1/2" around the design area.
